Dallas Mavericks’ forward Dirk Nowitzki is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

More from Dallas Mavericks

Although plenty of teams would like to reach out to Nowitzki, including the Mavericks’ in-state rivals, the Houston Rockets, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Nowtizki will be re-siging with the Mavericks and it really just a matter of when and not if (and how much money, of course). In fact, when asked about the Rockets’ interest, Nowitzki laughed it off.

“At this point of my career, it’s all about competing and winning. It’s not about money. Obviously, Cuban took care of me for a long, long time. I always tried to pay him back by hard playing and being here for this franchise, so I don’t think we’re going to fight over money.”

“I want to compete over these last couple of years. That’s going to be the goal.”

Although he has not met with him yet, according to Dwain Price of The Fort Worth Star Telegram, Nowitzki expects to talk to Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban soon.

Mavericks’ president Donnie Nelson again explained how badly the Mavericks want Nowitzki back.

Nowitzki averaged 21.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.7 rebounds per game last season while shooting 49.7% from the floor, 39.8% from beyond the arc and 89.9% from the free throw line. In his career, he has averaged 22.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game and shot 47.6% from the field, 38.3% from three and 87.9% from the charity stripe.
