The Denver Broncos announced recently that they were ready to initiate contract extension talks with wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas.

More from Denver Broncos

In a style befitting the John Elway era in the front office, the Broncos reportedly acted swiftly and aggressively, offering Demaryius Thomas an extension this week.

According to Troy Renck the Denver Post:

"The Broncos’ bid to complete contract extensions with two of their top passing game weapons has begun in earnest. They offered a five-year deal to receiver Demaryius Thomas, an NFL source said Friday, and have initiated talks with tight end Julius Thomas although no formal offer has been presented."

This report was refuted by Pro Football Talk early on Saturday, so it is unclear exactly what is happening. Even if that source is correct that there is “nothing going on,” the report from Renck would indicate at the very least that things are in motion as the Broncos look to keep Thomas in Denver for a long time.

Sources, you guys. Sources.

A deal for Thomas would presumably land in the range of about $12 million annually, which is close to what he received in total in his current deal. Given the splashy moves made by the Broncos this off-season, any offer to Thomas might require come creativity to make the money work, something Elway has shown a certain savvy for in the last couple years.

The current stage of the talks is unclear, but it won’t be surprising if the Broncos lock up both men named Thomas in the coming weeks.
