Guard Eric Bledsoe, who was out for half of the season with another knee injury is set to become a restricted free agent. The Suns hold the 14th-overall, 18th-overall and 27th-overall selections in this week’s draft and could use those picks to be a real player to land a veteran. The future of power forward Channing Frye is also up in the air.
It looks as if one of the Suns’ questions has been answered – Frye is going to opt out of the final year of his contract.
According to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, Frye hasn’t officially opted out, but there is a “99 percent” chance and he does. Stein also expects the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are expected to pursue Frye, noting Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr’s desire to add a stretch-four.
Frye averaged 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 43.2% from the floor, 37.0% from beyond the arc and 82.1% from the charity stripe. The 31-year old Frye was the eighth-overall pick in the first round of the 2005 draft by the New York Knicks. He has also played for the Portland Trail Blazers.
