With the Texas Rangers quickly falling out of both the division and Wild Card races, GM Jon Daniels is reportedly working the phones trying to gauge the value of his star players. The fire sale could soon be on in Texas. And some major names could be on the move.
Daniels spoke Monday about the situation in Texas (via Sports Day DFW):
"We are constantly talking about the realities of where we are as a club. I’m of the mind-set that we can still improve. We’ve grown accustomed the last couple of years to being in the pole position or near it. You adjust your point of view based on the standings. But you consider a lot of different things. There is no rule you have to make a major change before the deadline."
So, Daniels is hedging his bets publicly, talking about improvement while still indicating that a dip in the team’s fortunes could lead to a sell-off. Good GM-ing, Daniels.
Teams that are still actually in contention and need a starting pitcher would no doubt drool over the chance to acquire Yu Darvish, even if it meant giving up a bounty of prospects, but would Texas really deal their stud starting pitcher?
Guys like Adrian Beltre, Elvis Andrus and Alex Rios seem much more vulnerable. The Rangers will be an intriguing club as we approach the deadline.
