Devin Mesoraco homers in five straight games

If you had surging Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco in your “hit home runs in five straight games” pool, it’s your time to collect. But you probably didn’t.

More from Cincinnati Reds

While surely nobody predicted that the oft-injured Reds backstop would go yard in five consecutive games, he did just that, with the streak coming to an end on Wednesday night. The streak is a Reds team record.

Mesoraco has been a pleasant surprise for the Reds, who in recent years have allowed Ryan Hanigan, Dioner Navarro and Ramon Hernandez all leave the team in favor of the young Mesoraco. Though he’s battled injuries– two stints on the DL this season– Mesoraco has mashed the ball when healthy. Through 44 games, the 26-year old is hitting .318, with 40 RBI, 14 home runs, and a .384 on base percentage.

Over his hot streak, Mesoraco only had two hits that weren’t home runs, but still drove in 12 during the five games.

Mesoraco, along with rookie Billy Hamilton, and possible All-Star Todd Frazier have kept the Reds afloat as the team dealt with injuries to six all-stars, including Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Aroldis Chapman, Jonathan Broxton, Sean Marshall, and Mat Latos.

Though his streak came to an end, the Reds defeated the Cubs 4-1, bringing the team above .500.
