The 76ers reportedly covet former Kansas Jayhawks’ forward Andrew Wiggins, but were not able to put together a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cavaliers wound up taking Wiggins with the number one overall selection. The 76ers went with Wiggins’ Kansas teammate, center Joel Embiid. Embiid, like Nerlens Noel last year, could miss time after having surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right foot.
They then used the 10th-overall pick to select former Louisiana Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns’ Elfrid Payton. However, they dealt him to the Orlando Magic for their 12th-overall selection, Croatian forward Dario Saric. Saric signed in Turkey so he likely won’t be in the NBA for two more years. They also acquired a future first and second round pick.
With the 32nd-overall selection, they took former Clemson Tigers’ swingman K.J. McDaniels.
McDaniels measured in at 6’6 and 196 lbs. with a wingspan of 6’11.25 at the NBA’s Scouting Combine. He went for 17.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 45.9% from the field, 30.4% from beyond the arc and 84.2% from the free throw line last season. He is ranked as the 20th-best prospect by Jonathan Givony of Draft Express.
McDaniels was an excellent offensive player throughout his Tigers’ career and looked he would go much higher than he wound up going. The 76ers got a first round value in the second round at a position of need.
