That’s the case with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets who made a late second round trade during the draft on Thursday night and completed it in the wee morning hours of Friday.
According to Rick Bonell, who first broke news of the trade, the Cavaliers will acquire Brenden Haywood and the No. 45 overall pick in the draft who turned out to be Dwight Powell.
The Associated Press then passed along word that the deal would also involve Alonzo Gee going from Cleveland to Charlotte to complete the trade.
"Later, the Cavs traded swingman Alonzo Gee to Charlotte for Stanford forward Dwight Powell, selected with the No. 45 pick by the Hornets, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press. The Cavs will get the 6-foot-11 Powell and center Brendan Haywood, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade still needs to be approved by the league."
The trade is one that may not have a major impact on either team but it frees up $2 million for the Hornets and gives them a veteran in Gee who may end up being able to get the younger players some knowledge that keeps the team going in the right direction it started off in last year.
