CFL to allow coaches to challenge pass interference calls
By Josh Hill
The NFL is one of the biggest sports n the planet but it’s still learning how to walk when it comes to how the games are officiated. From the referee lockout that aborted the first few games of the 2013 season to the utterly terrible officiating that plagued the NFL last year, it’s been a rough few years for referees in North America but that’s going to simply be an American problem moving forward.

The CFL is progressively moving towards an easier system of officiating games and has ruled that instant replay is more valuable than we’re allowing it to be. In America, you can’t challenge a pass interference call but that’s changing in Canada.
According to Metroland Media’s Our Windsor, the CFL is making a bold move that puts it ahead of the NFL in terms of progression. Next season, unlike in the NFL, plays that involve critical pass interference calls will be subject to instant replay and could be reserved to benefit either sideline.
"This season, the Canadian Football League becomes the first football league to subject pass interference to video review. Coaches may challenge both penalty calls and calls that weren’t made.“It’s such a big penalty,” says Glen Johnson, the CFL’s new vice-president of officiating. “It’s the only penalty where we (take the ball) to the spot on the field where the penalty took place, and that can really have an impact on the game, especially near the end.”"
It’s a move that many are hoping the NFL is paying attention to as the reason why pass interference can’t be challenged in the NFL is beyond ridiculous. There really isn’t a good reason for it, but if the CFL has even a mildly successful season with reviewing pass interference calls, then there will more than likely be a swift push to get such a rule instated into the NFL rulebook.
