Udonis Haslem opts out of contract with Miami Heat
By Chris Walder
Udonis Haslem, an 11-year veteran of the Miami Heat organization, has elected to opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent, according to a report by Ethan Skolnick of Bleacher Report.
Fans of the Heat need not frown, though. This has been the plan all along.
By opting out, Haslem can sign a longer-term deal for more guaranteed money in total but less in the immediate future. That will create more breathing room for Pat Riley to bolster the roster through free agency.
He had a player option worth $4.6 million for next season, but now he can sign for up to four years for twice as much money.
His loyalty to the franchise and his years of service will surely generate him a generous deal.
While no longer a key member of the rotation, Haslem remains a serviceable forward and a beloved locker room leader.
