The Dallas Mavericks haven’t been shy about their desire to add a big name in free agency. The Mavericks have the cap space necessary to bring a big name to Dallas, it is just a matter of getting them to agree to joining the organization.

That is something they’ve been unable to do in the past several free agencies, but this year might be different. The first big name the Mavericks are focused on is New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, and he is the priority for the team.

From CBS Sports:

"The Mavericks are prioritizing a meeting Wednesday with Knicks free agent Carmelo Anthony in Dallas, trying to persuade the seven-time All-Star to reunite with former teammate Tyson Chandler and Dallas’ own free agent, Dirk Nowitzki. Anthony also locked in meetings with the Bulls on Tuesday, Rockets on Wednesday and Lakers on Thursday. The Knicks will get last licks."

It of course is crowded field competing for Anthony’s services, but the Mavericks have something this year they didn’t have pursuing big name free agents in years past, Tyson Chandler.

Not only does Chandler reportedly make the Mavericks more desirable from a free agent’s perspective, but as Anthony’s former teammate and friend he knows how to sell to Anthony and could talk to Anthony about the Mavs before free agency started Tuesday.
