NBA Free Agency opened as soon as the calendar page turned from June to July. The Dallas Mavericks will be big players in the market with all their cap space, and they met with a free agent at the stroke of midnight, point guard Devin Harris.

From Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas:

"Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s first order of business in free agency was to meet point guard Devin Harris for dinner. It appears that Harris is the priority, which would make sense considering that inconsistent Raymond Felton is the only veteran point guard on the roster after arriving in the six-player deal that sent last season’s starter, Jose Calderon, to the Knicks."

Harris has maintained that he wants to stay in Dallas.

“This is where I want to be,” Harris said via Kelly Ward of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “If it works out, that’s obviously what we would want to do.”

Wanting to be somewhere and having the same plan or deal in mind isn’t always how it works out. Harris could be seeing a bigger deal while the Mavericks are hoping to keep him on the cheap, a majority of their salary cap space would ideally go to Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James and Dirk Nowitzki.

“Business takes precedent over personal every day of the week. Sometimes with negotiations, they can get a little nasty, but you’ve just got to try to take a clear head and try to do what’s best for you in any type of situation.”
