Havlat and Elias played on the same line in Znojmo in the Czech Republic during the work stoppages of 20014-05. Both represented their country in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2011 IIHF World Championship.
Having played together on and off for over ten years, it was only a matter of time before they reunited in the NHL. After signing a one year deal, Havlat will have at least one season to play with his good friend.
"“We talked about the possibility of playing together before but it never worked out the way we wanted, but it’s happened now,” Havlat said. “I think it’s great. I’m going to the same team and to a team where I know quite a few guys, so that should make it an easier start for me.”"
After a rough season with the San Jose Sharks where he had 12 goals and 22 points over the course of 48 games and a season that was riddled with injuries, it is great to see Havlat excited about the coming season. There is no doubt Havlat is looking for a turnaround. With the Devils in need of some offensive help, this could be just the chance Havlat needs to prove he still has what it takes to compete in the NHL.
When asked if he’ll be playing on a line with Elias, Havlat said, “It’s going to be up to the coach but I think there will be some chemistry… I don’t know where I’ll be playing but hopefully it’ll work with someone.
Havlat assures that he is 100 percent healthy and is ready to play full force come fall.
