Oakland A’s option No. 4 starter Tommy Milone to triple-A
By Dan Zinski
After pulling off one of the biggest trades in recent memory, the Oakland A’s literally have more good pitchers than they know what to do with. The over-abundance of quality arms forced the A’s on Saturday to option their No. 4 starter Tommy Milone to triple-A, just so they would have a roster spot for Jeff Samardzija.

Milone has started 16 games for the A’s this season, compiling a 6-3 record with a 3.55 ERA. The left-hander pitched 190 and 156 innings in 2012 and 2013 respectively, winning 13 games in ’12 and 12 games in ’13.
So yeah, it’s a weird move to option this guy. But when shuffling players around, you have to take into consideration who has options left and who does not. The A’s thought it would be better to option Milone than DFA or waive someone else.
Milone will likely be back in the majors soon, or perhaps they are planning another huge trade. You just never know with Billy Beane, who right now is looking like a mad genius of swinging trades.
Any way you look at it, the A’s are sitting pretty from a pitching point-of-view. Adding Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to their rotation makes them the favorite to win the American League this year, and probably has made them the favorite to win the World Series.
Brad Pitt should start developing Moneyball 2 right now. This time, he can end his movie with a championship celebration instead of a lame scene of him driving in a car. What a suck ending.
