The pursuit of New York Knicks’ forward Carmelo Anthony could be coming to an end soon.

Anthony, one of the league’s best scorers, opted out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent and after speaking with five times, he appears to be nearing a decision.

As free agency opened on Tuesday, Anthony was in Chicago to visit the Bulls and tour their facilities. He got to watch the oft-injured Derrick Rose work out (perhaps without any prior knowledge) and then had dinner with Bulls’ center Joakim Noah, big man Taj Gibson, head coach Tom Thibodeau, general manager Gar Forman and owner Jerry Reinsdorf. He next visited the Houston Rockets and was pitched on playing with two other stars in guard James Harden and center Dwight Howard. He also met privately with those two.  He also visited with the Dallas Mavericks, but that meeting had been called “nothing more than a charade.” Then spoke with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Knicks in Los Angeles and Lakers reportedly made a “strong impression.”

None of Anthony’s suitors have been told they are out of the running.

However, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports there is a “rising sense around the league” Anthony will either re-sign with the Knicks or join the Lakers.

Anthony put up 27.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game and shot 45.2% from the field, 40.2% from beyond the arc and 84.8% from the free throw line last season.
