Dallas Mavericks rumors: Mavs going to strike out in free agency?
For each of the last three seasons, the Dallas Mavericks have tied to land one of the big fish in free agency. In 2012, the Mavericks chased Brooklyn Nets’ free agent point guard Deron Williams, who played high school basketball at The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas. Williams, of course, opted to re-sign with the Nets. Then, a year ago, they had their eyes on Los Angeles Lakers’ free agent center Dwight Howard, but he signed with their in-state rival, the Houston Rockets. This year, it was New York Knicks’ forward Carmelo Anthony who topped the Mavericks list, but all indications are they were never truly a contender for Anthony.

Yannis Koutroupis is worried the Mavericks are “going to swing and miss again” in free agency.
"I’m worried for Dallas’ sake they’re going to swing and miss again. I see Deng taking big dollar offer in Atlanta and Parsons staying in Houston. Other top tier guys don’t appear to be considering them seriously. Maybe Stephenson? That’s the best I can see them doing, although I don’t think he fits well at all with what they have right now. That’d be purely a talent grab."
The Mavericks have since agreed to a three-year deal worth over $45 million with Parsons. Of course, he is a restricted free agent meaning the Rockets can match the offer and retain him. They have said they would match any offer for Parsons, but if they can acquire Chris Bosh, they may not be able to keep Parsons.
Of course, if the Mavericks decide to offer big money to another player in the the Rockets do match, they probably will be able to bring them in by overpaying.
