World Cup final set: Germany vs Argentina on Sunday, July 13
By Mike Dyce
Germany steam rolled over host nation Brazil in their World Cup semifinal to punch their ticket to the final game. Argentina and the Netherlands squared off in the other semifinal match to determine the winner and it wasn’t quite as lopsided of an affair. Argentina needed penalty kicks to get past the Netherlands after extra time ending in a scoreless draw.
We know know the match up for the final game that will take place on Sunday, Germany will play Argentina. On Saturday Brazil will play the Netherlands in the third place game.
Before the final, Brazilian model Gisele and former Spain defender Carles Puyol, who won the World Cup in 2010, will present the trophy to the crowd. It is an interesting match up between two teams where considered to be contenders for the World Cup coming into the tournament.
It is an interesting point to acknowledge that no European team has won the World Cup in South America. With Germany’s 7-1 win over Brazil you have to think they’d be capable of breaking that trend.
“It’s an indescribable feeling,” Thomas Müller told FIFA after game against Brazil. “We got off to a great start and when you’re 5-0 up at half-time against Brazil in Brazil then you know it’s something special.
“Nobody was expecting that to happen. We hoped we’d get one or two chances because Brazil’s main strength is in attack. We need to let this all sink in now and then shift our focus to the Final. We want to win the trophy and we’re going to give everything to make that happen.”
Miroslav Klose, who set the record for all-time goals in the World Cup with 16, said “we have to win one more game.”
