Auburn Tigers’ quarterback Nick Marshall was cited for possession of marijuana in Reynolds, Georgia on Friday for ‘possession of marijuana less than one ounce’, according to a report from WSFA 12 News which was confirmed by Reynolds Police Chief Ronnie Holder.

Marshall was pulled over for a possible window tinting violation at at 12:48 p.m. according to the chief and the officer detected the smell of marijuana and a subsequent search found residue amounting to less than a single ounce, per the report.

He was given a citation but was not arrested.

Not that it’s ever a good time to be cited for possession of marijuana, but this is incredibly bad timing for Marshall who is scheduled to attend SEC Media Days which begin next Monday and will now have to face questions about his citation of marijuana rather than leading the Tigers to a miraculous turnaround last season.

  • Marshall had the world in the palm of his hands after leading Auburn to the SEC Championship in his first season and a berth in the BCS Championship. He is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country and named to the Maxwell Award watch list earlier this week, will be the preseason pick as the first-team All-SEC quarterback and a potential Heisman finalist.

Marshall threw for 1,976 passing yards, ran for 1,068 yards and had 26 TDs last season.

Auburn fans loved to give Jameis Winston flack after the reigning Heisman winner was cited this spring for shoplifting crab legs, so one can only wonder how Florida State fans (Alabama too) will respond to Marshall’s citation for marijuana.
