Brewers shortstop Jean Segura out indefinitely after death of nine-month old son
By Mike Marteny
Milwaukee Brewers shortstop got some bad news after the Brewers lost to the St Louis Cardinals 7-6 on a two run homer in top of the ninth by Matt Holliday. Segura’s mother had the news relayed to him in the clubhouse by one of his teammates that his nine month old son Janniel had died in the Dominican Republic.
Brewer manager Ron Roenicke said that Janniel had been sick, but he did not know for how long. There is no word on how the infant died or the circumstances surrounding it.

Segura’s teammate and fellow Dominican Carlos Gomez said that he did not know what happened and didn’t want to push. Gomez said he emerged from the shower and saw Segura crying. Upon asking what was wrong, he learned that he had lost his son.
“It’s tough” said Gomez. “After I leave last night, I can’t wait to come home and hug my kid and sleep with my kid. It’s hard to imagine. It’s painful. It’s not my kid, but I feel like it”
Gomez is a close friend of Segura’s, and was elected as teh one to speak to reporters about Janniel.
The Brewers have said that there is no timetable for Segura’s return, but hinted that he can have as long as he needs.
“He’ll just have to make a decision where he’s at and what he feels like” Roenicke said. “It’s different with everybody. Some guys might feel like, ‘Hey, I need to get back and I need to play’ and some other guys just can’t do it”
The rest of the team will take the field today at 4:10 eastern for the second game of a four game series against the Cardinals.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Segura family.
