Alvarez is one of the biggest draws in boxing and the biggest Mexican star in the sport, but there are many people who do not know the definition of Canelo’s nickname.
So, if you are one of those boxing fans who is wondering what “Canelo” actually means, we have your answer.
The nickname translates to cinnamon which is a reference to Canelo’s red hair.
He was given the nickname by Jose “Chepo” Reynoso, who discovered, managed and trained the boxer as he was coming up in the sport.
“I wanted [his nickname] to be something softer, nicer,” Reynoso told the Los Angeles Times, “because he was being called such harsh things.”
While Canelo was picked on for his freckles, red hair and fair skin as a child, there is no doubt that the former bullies are now well aware of the fact that the kid they used to pick on is one of the toughest men in the world.
