Everybody involved got the introduction right. Jonathan Lucroy and Adam Wainwright both made sure to step back and leave plenty of time for an ovation. The fans gave an enthusiastic and well-deserved standing ovation. The players on both sides honored Jeter.
To put the icing on the cake, a recording of Bob Sheppard announcing Jeter as the batter was used. Such as these types of traditions go, you just cannot beat Sheppard announcing Jeter on his way up to the plate.
Jeter promptly followed the ovation up with a double and a run scored, with the double being a patented Jeter swing. He took that inside out approach and ripped a double into the right field corner. For a guy who is on his way out, Jeter still showed a lot of the goods that have made him one of the greatest to ever play the game.
It can be a fine line for the All-Star Game; because the game now counts for home field advantage in the World Series, managers have to balance the need to win the game with the need to honor a legend like Jeter. Thankfully for John Farrell, Jeter made it easy by enjoying his ovation and then contributing a key hit.
