However, on Friday night at home against the Reds, the New York Yankees shortstop will pass Omar Vizquel for the most games ever started at shortstop, appearing in his 2,610th contest with a ‘6’ penciled in next to his name on the lineup card.
The baseball legend is the Yankees’ all-time leader in hits, games played, stolen based and at-bats. He recently appeared in his final All-Star Game, going 2-for-2 in what could only be called a picturesque moment for the Captain. With the Yankees battling injuries, entering the second half at 47-47, it remains unclear if Jeter will ever experience postseason baseball again, but in his historic career, he is a .351 hitter in World Series play.
This season, the 40-year-old Jeter is hitting .272, a respectable clip for anyone still playing the game at his age on a daily basis, but it seems like an off-year, given the high level of play we’ve all come to expect from him. Through the season’s first half, he has just two home runs and 25 RBIs. The only way his career could end in any better of a way would include him leading New York back to the postseason.
Stay tuned, folks.
