The New York Giants have been spending money at what is for them a Kardashians-on-Rodeo-Drive-like clip this offseason, bringing in starting talent at relatively high cost. But don’t expect such free-spending behavior to become the norm in New York.

More from New York Giants

Co-owner John Mara tells the New York Daily News that the wallet-loosening was a temporary measure and not an indication of a permanent shift in philosophy.

"It’s not going to happen every year. We’re not going to have that kind of cap room every year. And listen: If you’re that aggressive every year, there’s something wrong with your organization. But you have to do it every once in awhile."

If the Giants were going to spend big, this was the offseason to do it, with the roster obviously needing a quick overhaul and QB Eli Manning clearly not getting any younger.

The Maras may not have enjoyed opening up the checkbook for guys like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but that was better than going into the season with major holes, and risking squandering another year of their ever-shrinking championship window.

Good organizations know when to be frugal and when to let the money flow, and the Giants are a good organization. Bad organizations like the one run by Jerry Jones have no sense of fiscal responsibility and think every year is a good year to shell out the cash.

And that’s why, generally speaking, objective folks are more confident in the Giants’ ability to get back in the Super Bowl hunt than the Cowboys’.
