On Thursday night, Isaiah Canaan outdueled the No. 1 overall pick, Andrew Wiggins. The point guard let him know about it, too. Canaan has a few things to improve, namely defense, but confidence certainly isn’t one of them. Behind a 28-point output, Canaan increased his scoring average to 17 on 40 percent shooting from the field.
After shipping Jeremy Lin to the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston has a noticeable void at backup point guard. But they might have just found their solution in the Rockets 2013 second-round pick. As a member of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the renowned Rockets D-League affiliate, Canaan simmered last season in a system where he not only had to find his shot, but be comfortable hoisting it in high volume at the mind-bending pace the Vipers run. The effect of the Viper system has been evident in Vegas, and Canaan may have won himself an opportunity to play in the NBA in 2014-15.
