Kentavious Caldwell-Pope—Detroit Pistons—Orlando Summer League
30.2 MPG | 24.0 PTS | 38-94 FGM-FGA | .404 FG% | 7.4 RPG | 1.6 APG
It’s easy to forget the Kentavious Caldwell-Pope played 80 games a season ago for an abysmal Detroit squad. He shot poorly from the field—39 percent—and just 77 percent from the free-throw line and 31 percent from beyond the arc. With Jodie Meeks coming aboard, there’s heavy competition for the starting shooting guard position.
Caldwell-Pope isn’t making it easier.
Leading all scorers at the Orlando Summer League, Caldwell-Pope shot 40 percent from the field and although his 3-point touch is still less than stellar—33 percent—he’s at least developed different areas of his game. His rebounding numbers are good news for new coach Stan Van Gundy, who had good things to say about the second-year player at the end of the tournament.
"“You have to be careful trying to project summer-league performances. You can go back historically on those and they’re not great predictors. With KCP, it’s not the production, not the numbers that he had in the summer league — it was his approach, the intensity he played with on a very consistent basis.”"
