Saturday featured a full five-game slate of action as the 2014 Liga MX Apertura kicked into full swing, and it was a meeting between reigning champions Leon and Club America that was the marquee match of the day.

When the final whistle blew, it was Club America who came out on top, 2-0, and earned an early three points to join the top of the Apertura table.

Leon entered the Apertura as the reigning Liga MX champions, while Club America is the last non-Leon club to claim the league title.

Las Aguilas had the big addition of Mexican international star Oribe Peralta this offseason, and they were hoping that adding Peralta up front will help the team get off to a hot start and earn the early three points.

While Peralta didn’t show off his knack for scoring early in the match, the Club America offense was in top form.

Osvaldo “Osvaldito” Martínez found the back of the net for Las Aguilas in the 19th minute, after beating Leon goalie William Yarbrough.

In the 37th minute, Osvaldito recorded his second goal of the game off of a free kick, but it was a massive mistake from Yarbrough.

Yarbrough tried to make the save for Leon, but he ended up falling into the net and the ball crossed the goal line to put Club America up 2-0.

It wasn’t the kind of start that the reigning champs were hoping for and they would need a big second half to avoid a disappointing start to the 2014 Apertura.

Leon was fighting hard to get back into the match, but the Las Aguilas defense was hanging strong.

Club America gave up a great chance late in the match when Juan Valenzuela committed a foul inside of the box to give Leon a penalty kick attempt. Mauro Boselli lined up to take the kick for Leon, but Moises Munoz came up with a huge save for Las Aguilas.

Leon got another penalty opportunity after Munoz’s save, and this time Boselli did not waste the chance as Leon pulled within one goal, 2-1. The penalty was committed by Pablo Aguilar, who was booked with a yellow card.

While Leon made things interesting down the stretch, the defending champions were unable to overcome their slow start and early mistakes as Club America went on to secure the win.
