Rory McIlroy’s dad has 10-year-old bet on his son to win Open Championship
By Sam Richmond
Rory McIlroy is looking like the easy bet to win the 2014 Open Championship that will conclude Sunday. McIlory shot a 4-under on Saturday and will head into the final round with a six-stroke lead over Rickie Fowler, the largest stroke lead after 54-holes at The Open since 2000, according to ESPN.

At this point, it would be tough to find odds that are favorable to the better on McIlory.
However, if one had bet on McIlroy to win 10 years ago, they’d be in a much better position to earn a lot tomorrow.
Well, somebody did make that bet a decade ago and that person was McIlory’s father.
Michael Collins of ESPN has the details:
"According to the BBC’s Andrew Cotter, 10 years ago Rory McIlroy‘s father Gerry and three friends made a legal bet of 400 British pounds (100 each, equivalent to $170.87 currently) that the then-15-year-old would win the Open Championship by the age of 26.On Sunday, the Northern Irishman will be 25 years, 2 months and 16 days, meaning his father and friends would collect 200,000 pounds (roughly $341,730). Though the bet actually stipulated that the younger McIlroy would win by the time he was 25, Cotter confirmed that even though McIlroy’s birthday has passed, the wager still counts as he has not yet turned 26."
Talk about having faith in your son rewarded.
Considering the Open Championship winner is awarded $1.2 million, Sunday could be a very profitable day for the McIlroy family.
