The Cleveland Cavaliers are expecting to sign No. 1 overall pick and former Kansas guard Andrew Wiggins this week according to a report by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

More from Cleveland Cavaliers

Ever since LeBron James announced his return to the Cavaliers, rumors have been running rampant that the team was willing to trade Wiggins in order to get Kevin Love from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Even though the rumor has gained some traction, there is apparently no deal set in place, and signing Wiggins would only make it more difficult for the Cavaliers to trade him down the road.

The reason being is that the NBA would not allow the Cavaliers to trade Wiggins for 30 days after he signs with the team. If that is indeed the case, the window of opportunity may close on the Cavaliers in their hopes of getting Love to join LeBron and Kyrie in Cleveland.

According to reports, the Cavaliers have waited to sign Wiggins not in case they trade him for Love, but because they wanted to mull their options over in regards to what they might do with the extra $1.4 million in remaining salary cap before signing him.

Wiggins’ rookie contract would have him sign on with the Cavaliers somewhere in the $5.5 million area, which does not leave the team with much room to sign other veteran players. The Cavaliers have already expressed their interest in signing free agent Mike Miller, which is also expected to occur this week, as well as Ray Allen, which is more unlikely.
