Perhaps nobody needed scoring more than the Chicago Bulls, which is why they traded their two first round picks, the 16th-overall and 19th-overall selections to acquire the 11th-overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, former Creighton Blue Jays’ forward Doug McDermott.

More from Atlanta Hawks

McDermott burst on to the scene in the Las Vegas Pro Summer League. In a 103-76 win over the Denver Nuggets last week, he dropped 31 points. He was also extremely efficient – he shot seven-of-12 from the field. He was five-of-nine from beyond the arc and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line.

As Matt Moore of CBS Sports explains, McDermott has been getting advice from former Chicago Bulls and current Atlanta Hawks’ swingman Kyle Korver.

"McDermott has received guidance on how to navigate his time with Chicago from a former Bull to whom he’s often compared.“[Kyle] Korver is a guy from Creighton who played with a lot of these guys, so he’s given me some advice.”For all the hand-wringing about McDermott’s projection as a player, Korver may be the best fit. And if he can follow Korver’s guidance to become a similar-level player, he’s going to have a productive and long career in the league. Either way, if you believe in first impressions, McDermott made a good one in Summer League."

McDermott won the Naismith Award as the country’s best player, putting up a career-high 26.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He shot 52.6% from the field, 44.9% from beyond the arc and 86.4% from the free throw line. He measured in at 6’7.75 and 218 lbs. with a wingspan of 6’9.25 He was ranked as the 10th-best prospect in the draft by Jonathan Givony of Draft Express.
