There’s certainly a lot at stake for Garcia, as there always is when it comes to major championships. A grizzled veteran at this point in his career, Garcia is still trying to overcome the unfortunate reputation that he cannot close things out. If he can do that, with significant help from McIlroy, he might just be able to steal his first victory in a major.
While McIlroy has mostly been treading water, over par for the day, Garcia walked up to the tee at the par three no. 15 hole with a five-under mark on the day. Garcia proceeded to send his tee shot into the bunker. While that certainly was not ideal, it looked to be a salvageable situation because Garcia was able to take a full stance, something that is rare in the bunkers in this year’s tournament.
Unfortunately Garcia made an ugly and potentially costly mistake, catching way too much sand and failing to even make it out of the bunker.
Check out the failed sand shot from Garcia below.
He went on to minimize the damage and make bogey, but it was a crucial shot lost on the final nine of The Open Championship.
