New York Giants starting offensive lineman Chris Snee is retiring, he announced on Monday. Losing Snee could change the way the Giants game plan their offensive line. He’s essential and dominant. For every action, there is a reaction, and thus some might expect the Giants to explore the free agent market. But Giants’ co-owner John Mara said they won’t.

According to ProFootballTalk, Snee admitted in a press conference that at the end of June he told General Manager Jerry Reese that he was considering retirement, so he did not want to blindside the Giants organization. It seems they have been preparing for his eventual retirement in this year and acted accordingly. They have right guards on the roster, whom they feel comfortable starting. Brandon Mosley has the upper hand over John Jerry, who is still recovering from an offseason knee procedure. Only after they have tested these to on-roster options will they consider free agency.
Snee’s reproduction will be incredibly difficult to reproduce on-roster or in free agency. He was a veteran of the team and would have been an essential leader as the team transitions into the new systems implemented by newly hired Ben McAdoo.
“I felt worse by continuing to work out,” Snee told Josina Anderson of ESPN. “I am nowhere near the level of strength that I usually have. That’s been my game for 10 years, being one of the strongest players out there and using that to my advantage. If I don’t have that, I wouldn’t be able to do my job the way I expect, but also with what they expect of me … “
Though he has passed his physical peak, he will still find a place in the Giants Ring of Honor.
