Even with that move, the Yankees are reportedly continuing to scour the trade market for a potential deal thanks to the end of C.C. Sabathia‘s season and the uncertain situation that is Masahiro Tanaka‘s health. Near the top of their wish list is San Diego Padres’ starter Ian Kennedy, though they will have to put together a sparkling trade offer for him.
Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports that the Yankees continued their interest in Kennedy this week.
Kennedy was sent to San Diego in a bizarre trade during a brief downward turn in his career. He has gotten back on track in 2014, however, with a 3.66 ERA in 22 starts. He has an impressive 3.10 FIP and he has his K/9 back up to 9.5.
If he left the friendly pitching confines of San Diego those numbers might creep back up a little bit, but he would still be a great get for a contending team in need of help in the rotation.
As for the Yankees, they continue to just barely hang onto their spot in the playoff picture. The question that lingers for them is whether they believe they can continue to overachieve relative to the talent on their roster, talent that has been hit hard by injuries. If they believe they can, another bold move for a starting pitcher might be necessary.
