Even if they won’t admit it, both sides in the trade want resolution before the start of the season as the Wolves wanting to hang onto Love through this year is starting to look more and more stupid as the days go by. A sign-and-trade at the end of the year is possible, but the bottom line is a trade will need to be made before then if Minnesota wants max value for Love.
According to Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer, the Cavaliers may not be able to get Love to commit to an extension when he’s acquired, but regardless of that they plan on offering him a max salary contract in the summer of 2015 — something that not having LeBron James take is now coming back to help Cleveland.
"I’m hearing the Cavs realize they may have to accept Love’s current deal and gamble on him enjoying playing in Cleveland and with James. Then they will try to sign him for a maximum deal in 2015. So don’t be shocked if a deal is made with his contract situation staying the same"
The fact that Love is already getting max offers a year early goes to show how low his trade value would be in a sign and trade. It would be pennies on the dollar in terms of a return for the Wolves if they wait for a sign-and-trade as Cleveland won’t be the only team in 2015 extending a max offer to Love.
