The Boston Red Sox seem to be on the fence about being buyer or sellers at the trade deadline but it looks like they’re settling in on being either sellers or just standing pat.

More from Boston Red Sox

They’re casting a wide net though as reports came out over the last 24 hours that names such as Jon Lester, Andrew Miller and John Lackey were being made available on the trade market and that sparked massive interest across the league. With around 48 hours to go before the trade deadline passes, the Red Sox are starting to be mentioned in more and more rumors with some seemingly unlikely partners.

According to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com, the Red Sox could make trade partners for the Kansas City Royals when it comes to the immediate future home for John Lackey.

"There was a report Monday night that the Red Sox would be willing to trade John Lackey. Teams have made inquiries, including the Kansas City Royals, according to one source, but with Lackey due to make the major league minimum next season, the Sox are more inclined to keep him. But it bears repeating every year: Things are very fluid at the deadline, and surprises often abound."

The Royals have fallen off after the All-Star Break but are still in contention for an AL Wild Card spot and that’s something they’d strive for if they landed someone like Lackey to help anchor their rotation and give them a real starting threat to throw in the mound.
