NYCFC acquires Andrew Jacobson from FC Dallas

The MLS’s 20th expansion franchise New York City FC acquired their fifth franchise player on Tuesday, trading for midfielder Andrew Jacobson from FC Dallas.

NYCFC traded their third-round pick in the 2016 SuperDraft to FC Dallas for the 28-year old, Palo Alto, California native Jacobson, who will spend the rest of the year on loan in Norway at Stabaek under former USMNT coach Bob Bradley until January 2015 when he will rejoin NYCFC to prepare for the team’s preseason.

Jacobson is NYCFC’s second midfielder, joining the recently acquired Frank Lampard who was announced by the team last Thursday.  He is also the third MLS player to join them along with goalkeeper Josh Saunders and defender Jeb Brovsky.

“I’m delighted to sign a player of Andrew’s experience and quality as we continue to build our roster ahead of the 2015 season,” NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis said in his statement.  “He is a player my staff and I have liked for quite some time and we are thrilled to add such a versatile and competitive midfielder to our squad”

  • Jacobson has been with three different teams in his five-year MLS career, spending his first two years with D.C. United and Philadelphia Union before being traded to FC Dallas in 2011.  Jacobson appeared in 98 games with FC Dallas, starting in 85 of them, scoring five goals in his three-plus years with the team along with seven assists.

“Andrew has a wealth of experience in this league having previously played for three MLS clubs and I think that will be important to us,” Kreis added.

Jacobson was given the captain’s armband to start the 2014 MLS season, however lost the armband and his starting spot to injury shortly after.  He never seemed to meet the expectations that were set upon him during his time in Texas.

The move seems to be perfect for Jacobson’s development, as he’ll work first-hand with players like Lampard and David Villa when he gets back to NYCFC in January.  Kreis and the rest of NYCFC hopes that Jacobson picks up a few things throughout the next four months with Bob Bradley in Norway.
