As a result of this situation and the uncertainty surrounding their veteran second baseman Marco Scutaro, the Giants have been linked to virtually every available middle infielder you can think of. That list has included Daniel Murphy, Chase Utley, Gordon Beckham, and most recently Emilio Bonifacio.
The rumors surrounding Bonifacio heated up for the Giants and for a number of other teams on Wednesday. It seemed like the Cubs were on the verge of making a trade, it’st just that nobody could figure out to which team.
According to Hank Schulman, it is not the Giants who will be trading for the speedy utility player.
Bonifacio has played well in 2014. He is batting .279/.318/.373 with 14 stolen bases. His ability to play so many positions in the infield and the outfield makes him even more appealing. A contending team could use him in a role where he plays everyday, comes off the bench, or does some of both.
Whichever team lands Bonifacio will get a useful player, the kind of guy who can make a big difference in September and October.
