The Miami Marlins are said to still be in on Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, but the chances of Lester ending up in Miami seem remote. John Lackey on the other hand might make sense for Miami, and in fact Jon Morosi reports that the Marlins and Red Sox are discussing just such a trade.

Earlier on Wednesday it was reported by Ken Rosenthal that both Lester and Lackey are headed out of Boston. Lester’s name has been connected to multiple teams, most recently the Oakland A’s, while Lackey has been floated out there as sort of a consolation prize for teams that can’t afford Lester (or Cole Hamels or David Price).
The Marlins have confirmed that they’re in the market for a pitcher, but it’s not believed that they would make a serious run at Lester given that he would be only a rental for half the season. Lackey is a guy they could potentially have for a little while, who would provide them a veteran anchor for their rotation.
Miami is scrapping to stay in the race this year but they’re not yet such serious contenders that they would consider selling the farm to go after a pennant. So Lester just doesn’t make sense. Lackey does make sense and it would not be a surprise to see this trade go down.
