The Jon Lester trade rumors are starting to kick up as the trade deadline nears and that’s something that could lead to some interesting teams making a push to acquire the ace from the Boston Red Sox.

More from Boston Red Sox

The list of teams that are immediately interested in Lester has been known for a while, but int he 11th hr of the deadline, anything is possible and there could be a team that storms out of nowhere to make a play on Lester and acquire him from the Red Sox. That team could end up being the sneaky Oakland Athletics.

According to Jon Heyman from CBSSports.com, a mystery team to watch in the John Lackey sweepstakes are the Oakland A’s.

"The Athletics , who already acquired Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, are said to have at least some involvement in the Jon Lester derby, according to people familiar with the talks."

Heyman continues to say that it’s not immediately apparent if the A’s have what it takes to talk the Red Sox into making a deal but it’s clear that they’re at least interested in making a push to see if it’s possible.

"It isn’t known what Oakland’s chances are at this point to make a deal with the Red Sox, but they already pulled off one surprise by landing Samardzija and Hammel together in a deal with the Cubs."

A trade that sends Lester to the A’s would be a total game changer in the American League as it would give them three brand new starting aces in addition to what they already have, which would make Oakland a favorite to make it out of the AL and represent in the World Series.

Of course, a Lester trade is easier said than done, but if Oakland wants it bad enough, they’ll find a way to make it happen before tomorrow’s deadline.
