Boston has reportedly traded Andrew Miller to the Baltimore Orioles.
The left-handed reliever Miller, a former no. 6 overall pick, was one of the more valuable trade pieces on the market. That fact was obscured somewhat by the fact that the Red Sox were also able to trade Jon Lester on John Lackey for nice returns on Thursday, but Miller remained a player in whom many teams were interested.
The Red Sox supposedly were close to a deal that would have sent Miller to the Detroit Tigers earlier in the day on Thursday. That deal fell through, at which point the Red Sox apparently turned to a team within the division in the Orioles.
Jerry Crasnick had the news first.
Alex Speier had details on Boston’s end of the deal.
The Orioles are obviously as familiar with Miller’s work as anybody. This adds another tough lefty to a Baltimore bullpen that was already stocked in that regard. Not insignificantly, it also keeps Miller away from the Tigers.
