What is the fantasy impact of Tom Milone in Minnesota?

The Oakland Athletics got outfielder Sam Fuld from the Minnesota Twins for pitcher Tom Milone.

Yes, Fuld got traded back to the team that placed him on waivers in the middle of April.

Fuld is hitting .263 with a pair of homers and 13 steals in 60 games.  He will likely be in Oakland’s outfield rotation, and could platoon with Jonny Gomes in left field.

If any of you deep leaguers were rolling with Fuld to help your steals, he may still be able to help you.  Coco Crisp is still dealing with a sore neck, and this move suggests that it may be more serious than they are letting on.  Don’t  drop Fuld just yet.

The intriguing part of this deal is left hander Tom Milone moving to the Twins.  First of all, the Twins essentially got him for free, since they claimed Fuld off of waivers earlier this year.  Second, Milone was one of the better prospects in the A’s organization as short as two years ago.  At age 27, he is hardly washed up.

That said, the A’s have no need for him after acquiring three starting pitchers this month.  This freed them up to go after someone that can help them in the outfield.

Milone is 32-22 with a 3.84 ERA in his four year career, and he arguably becomes the best pitcher in the Twins organization.  He will start off at AAA Rochester, but how long will the Twins keep throwing the struggling Kevin Correia and Yohan Pino out there?  It seems to me like Milone will be in the rotation very soon.

For this reason, I would recommend stashing him if you have a bench slot open.  The ability is there, and Target Field has turned out to be a pitcher’s park.  His win totals will likely be tempered, but if you are desperate for help, he should be along soon.

The part that really gets me about this trade is that the Twins called up slugger Kennys Vargas from AA New Britain to replace Fuld on the active roster.  He will likely take over as the Twins everyday DH.  For those of you in need of power, he is certainly worth a look.
