San Francisco Giants Rumors: Matt Cain considering elbow surgery
By Josh Hill
The San Francisco Giants are a half game up on the NL Wild Card chase but are about to lose one of their best assets in their pennant chase as ace Matt Cain could be lost for the remainder of the season due to elbow surgery to clean out bone chips that are causing problems.
According to Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com, the Giants ace is looking at options regarding the cleasning of his elbow and the most likely option seems to be surgery that would end Cain’s season.
"The Giants will make a decision soon on whether Matt Cain will undergo arthroscopic right elbow surgery to clean out bone chips and other debris. The good news: He doesn’t require any repairs more drastic than that."
Before Giants fans go waltzing to the Golden State Bridge over the news that Cain could be lost for the season, Tommy John surgery will not be the procedure performed, so things aren’t as drastic as they may otherwise seem.
"Cain’s ulnar collateral ligament checked out fine. He does not require a Tommy John procedure, nor did anyone on the Giants staff believe that to be the case when they sent him to Dr. Andrews."
The acquisition of Jake Peavy helps alleviate some of the devastation of losing Cain to elbow surgery, but at the end of the day at least the ace doesn’t need Tommy John surgery and won’t be lost for as long as he could be.
