St. Louis Rams rumors: Benny Cunningham holding off Tre Mason for no. 2 RB spot
By Jack Crosby
When the St. Louis Rams drafted Auburn running back Tre Mason this past May in the NFL Draft, there were some that jumped the gun and immediately began speculating as to how many carries he would get in his rookie season as the backup to Zac Stacy. Well hold off on that for a little bit, because it seems that Benny Cunningham isn’t giving that job up without a fight.

According to SB Nation’s Rams blog, Turf Show Times, Cunningham is holding on firmly to that back up role behind Stacy. Wee at least for now he is.
"Cunningham is an interesting running back. His style is similar to Stacy. So far in camp, he’s held on firmly to the primary backup role, but things could change once the preseason begins. The Rams didn’t draft Mason not to play him."
As they stated, the Rams and Jeff Fisher did not go out and grab one of the most prolific, versatile backs coming out of college to have him sit the bench for the majority of the season.
But with Cunningham stepping up and showing that he can be just as dangerous back there as Mason, this gives the Rams more time to ease the rookie into the offense and the NFL style, rather than throwing him into the fire right off the bat.
