Baltimore Orioles tried to trade for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera
By Dan Zinski
Some in Orioles Nation are wondering why Baltimore didn’t do more to improve their offense at the trade deadline, thereby improving their chances of holding off the Blue Jays and Yankees to win the AL East.

Roch Kubatko of Masnsports.com says the Orioles did attempt to swing a deal that might have helped their lineup but it never came together:
"The Orioles failed to trade for a hitter Thursday despite making a final push shortly before 4 p.m. Executive vice president Dan Duquette was trying to work a couple of deals, and he came close to acquiring Indians middle infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, according to sources. The Indians decided to take Nationals infield prospect Zach Walters in exchange for Cabrera, who was batting .246/.305/.386 with 22 doubles, nine homers and 40 RBIs in 97 games. From what I’ve heard, it came down to the beltway rivals."
Kubatko says Duquette remains “confident” he can make a waiver deal to bring some more pop to the Baltimore offense. The problem is there’s not a lot of pop out there to be had.
The fact that we’re talking about Asdrubal Cabrera as a “good bat” the Orioles missed out on kind of says all you need to know about the state of the trade market for hitters. The Orioles didn’t give up more for Cabrera because they didn’t think Cabrera was worth any more.
The Orioles elected not to overpay for mediocrity, and some people are slamming them for it? Okay.
