The Giants have drawn first blood in the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game. No, I’m not talking about their touchdown. They kicked the first ever 15-yard line extra point. Kicker Josh Brown changed NFL Preseason history.

More from New York Giants

The players actually forgot that this rule change was in  effect and they all were ushered back by the referees.

With one aspect of special teams — kickoffs — slowing down, it’s interesting that the NFL is ramping up the excitement and risk for another “special” stage of the game. Technically, it would have been 33-yard field goal. That’s not a sure thing. Teams can get around and block it more likely. Teams are more likely to miss.

The longer extra point brings a great element to the game, and frankly, I’d like to see more than just two weeks of preseason games with this rule. It requires coaches to rethink their extra points. If there is bad weather or wind, it provides some more suspense. Hopefully, it will encourage more 2-point conversions — though, a fifteen yard touchdown is a daunting task in one play. When a team misses there extra point — and they would if it was in effect for more games — it would be interesting to see how teams react and adjust to the score.
