Tony Dungy, HC (Buccaneers 1996-2001, Colts 2002-08)

He only survived as a player for three seasons in the NFL, however where Tony Dungy made his mark in the NFL was on the sidelines as a coach.

Respected by everyone in the league, Dungy created the dominant Tampa-two defense in Tampa Bay, turning the Bucs into one of the best defenses in the NFL in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

The only thing he was missing in Tampa to get them to the Super Bowl was a powerful offense, which he inherited when he took the job as the Colts head coach prior to the 2002 season.

He installed his Tampa-two defense in Indy and the Colts found their way to a Super Bowl title in 2006, defeating the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI as Dungy became the first African-American coach to win a Super Bowl in NFL history.  The Colts averaged 10 wins per season during Dungy’s seven-year tenure as head coach, going 7-6 in the playoffs with Indianapolis.  He finished his NFL coaching career with a 139-69 record and an overall 9-10 playoff record.

Although Dungy just missed the final cut in 2014, expect his name to come back up for the 2015 class.
