Lat monday the Philadelphia Phillies designated outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment, on Sunday the two sides reached an agreement on a minor league contract. Gwynn Jr. was then assigned to Triple A Lehigh Valley according to CSNPhilly’s Jim Salisbury.

The 31-year-old outfielder struggled big time offensively, with a .163/.281/.204 slash line with three RBI and two stolen bases in 119 plate appearances. His biggest attribute was speed, but not being able to get on base at all negated any advantage he would’ve had on the field.

With a starting lineup in the outfield that features Ben Revere, Marlon Byrd and Grady Sizemore there wasn’t much room for Gwynn on the bench the rest of the way.

Gwynn Jr. was a second round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2003 draft and made his MLB debut with the Brewers in 2006. He would play parts of three seasons with the Brewers before heading to San Diego as part of the Trevor Hoffman trade.

After two years in a Padres uniform, Gwynn Jr. went to the Los Angeles Dodgers, playing two seasons there before playing all of 2013 at Triple A Albuquerque—where he hit .300 on the season.

For his career, Gwynn has hit .239 with an on-base percentage of .310 and a slugging percentage of .311. He’s also stolen 79 bases during his career.
