Cain, 29, has been out of action for the San Francisco giants dating back to July 11 when it was revealed he had loose bodies floating in his elbow and Dr. James Andrews and Dr. David Altchek, both confirmed that surgery would be required to remove the bone chips.
The Giants right-hander hoped to pitch through the injury and avoid surgery until the offseason, but after throwing off flat ground on Friday was not optimistic he could wait that long, so the difficult decision was made to shut it down and get it corrected and ensure that he will be healthy for next season.
If there is a silver lining for Cain and the Giants it is that his elbow ligament is perfectly in tact so there are no Tommy John fears for one of the Giants’ aces. Cain is expected to require three months to recover from the surgery and will be ready when spring training opens next February.
The Giants acquired Jake Peavy from the Boston Red Sox in July in an effort to shore up the rotation knowing that Cain was unlikely to pitch again this season.
Cain was only 2-7 this season with a 4.18 ERA in 90 1/3 innings of work over 15 starts suggesting that pitching through the discomfort of the bone chips in his elbow contributed to his struggles on the mound.
The Giants are currently two games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League west and hold a half-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the wild card standings.
