The San Francisco Giants are looking for the guy who will bring that Marco Scutaro magic this season at the second base position.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like that magic is going to come from Scutaro himself, so they are left to continue searching. To the surprise of nobody, Dan Uggla was not the answer.

The non-waiver trade deadline came and went this week with no action from the Giants, but that does not necessarily rule them out from making a move. Dave Schoenfield of ESPN notes as much and predicts that we might still see a move yet from general manager Brian Sabean to improve that hole on the roster.

"Brian Sabean has made waiver pickups before, so don’t count him from getting somebody — maybe a guy like Luis Valbuena from the Chicago Cubs. As the offense improves, the Giants should solidify their place in the wild-card standings…"

San Francisco enters this week’s action 2.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings. As for the Wild Card, if the season ended now the team would be grappled in a tight race with the likes of the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates.

They have managed to hang onto this spot in the playoff race despite an offense that continues to flail and struggle for sustained stretches of time. Part of the improvement in that regard could come internally as guys get on track. The other part of getting the offense on track, however, might come from making another move to add a player at second base.
