The Houston Rockets had high hopes when free agency opened. They targeted New York Knicks’ forward Carmelo Anthony and then Miami Heat big man Chris Bosh but both players wound up re-signing with their teams on five-year, near-max contracts.

More from Dallas Mavericks

In order to clear space to attempt to sign those players, the Rockets parted ways with several players, dealing center Omer Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans and point guard Jeremy Lin to the Los Angeles Lakers. They also declined the option on forward Chandler Parsons, making him a restricted free agent. Parsons signed a three-year, $46 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks and the Rockets opted not to match. There has since been speculation the Rockets could use Mavericks’ free agent Shawn Marion to replace Parsons.

Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors believes the Rockets could use the rest of their mid-level exception to sign Marion.

"I don’t think those are mutually exclusive pursuits. The Rockets still have the vast majority of their mid-level exception available, and I think they’ll eventually emerge as a contender for Marion, who’s probably holding out for more than anybody’s willing to give him at this point."

Marion averaged 10.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 48.2% from the field,  35.8% from beyond the arc and 78.5% from the free throw line last season. Over the course of his career, he’s put up 15.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 48.5% from the floor, 33.2% from three and 81.1% from the charity stripe.
