The Colorado Rockies are a bad baseball team. Truly, they are awful. Make no mistake about that. But do the baseball gods really have to keep kicking them while they are down?

More from Colorado Rockies

Star players Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez are both hurt, with Tulo on the disabled list for the foreseeable future. Michael Cuddyer is still out. Jhoulys Chacin, a top starting pitcher from last season, is done for the season. Injuries to the rest of the rotation have left the team in a situation where they have used 14 different starting pitchers.

That number is not a type-o. They have used 14 starting pitchers this season. I’ll let you guess how many of them have been any good.

Now Brett Anderson, one of the few proven big league pitchers on the roster and a guy who has looked great lately, was forced to exit his start early on Tuesday night due to a back injury.

Anderson had already missed time previously with a broken finger sustained while swinging the bat. Between these dings and his unfortunate injury history while with the Oakland Athletics, Anderson is doing nothing to refute the claim that he cannot consistently stay healthy.

The Rockies will have a decision to make this off-season with Anderson. They plan to exercise their $12 million option to keep the lefty, and given his 3.12 ERA this season, that makes total sense.

But if the Colorado front office didn’t already know it by now, they were reminded once again on Tuesday what kind of risk they are taking on by counting on Anderson to put together a healthy season.
