New York Jets rookie safety Calvin Pryor was cleared for contact this past Monday after having suffered a concussion, but it appears that won’t be enough to convince a coaching staff to put him on the field just yet. Per Eric Allen from newyorkjets.com, Pryor will miss the team’s preseason opener on Thursday.
Rex anticipates Calvin Pryor won't play Thursday and he expects to get the starters about a quarter of action.

The rest of the news for the preseason is what one would expect for the first exhibition game, but the coaching staff must be at least a little disappointed to delay a first look at their first round pick from the 2014 draft. However, a concussion is nothing to trifle with these days and to risk Pryor’s health, even in the smallest, for a preseason game would be an imprudent move for the Jets coaching staff.

The Jets are counting on Pryor to help shore up their secondary, which wasn’t bad a year ago, but was unable to keep up with the team’s stalwart run defense, exposing the team to a game planning weakness. In Pryor, the Jets have a hard-hitting safety with strong confidence who could potentially fill the role of an impact player in the middle of the secondary and alter opponent’s game plans.
For now at least, Rex Ryan will have to wait a little longer to envision just what kind of impact Calvin Pryor might have on the Jets defense.
